Orton - 10th April 2012

On the way home from Scotland we pulled off the motorway and headed towards Kendal for refreshments and a break.  As luck would have it we stumbled across Orton in Cumbria, a beautiful village which just happens to be on the popular coast to coast route for walkers.

The weather was lovely after all the rain we had in Scotland.  And better still we chanced upon the George Hotel and the lovely landlady there.  She had some chips and onion rings made for us and we talked about our trip and the possibilty of staging an event at her pub/hotel and the local farmers' market.

A recommended place to eat and drink. The prices are reasonable and the food is good.

Orton will probably become a regular stop for us when we are passing.

Didn't stop in Rigg in Dumfries and Galloway so technically we shouldn't include it in the challenge, but I thought I would share the two photos we have anyway.  We were on our way back home from Hoddom Castle and eager to get a good run on the M6 going south.

Eastriggs

On the way back from Hoddom Castle again. I would love to have seen the Devil's Porridge Exhibition, but we ran out of time and money on this trip.  This is why we tend to go back to places of real interest and treat these flying visits as foundations for a more organised trip.

Dornock

Town, Village or Hamlet: Village
County: Dumfries and Galloway
Grid Reference: NY231660
Date Visited: 10 April 2012
Challenge Status: No video. Need to stop and look around.

On the way home from our trip to Hoddom Castle we tried to stop in Dornock, but the rain was coming down hard and we abandoned any prolonged stay. But here are a couple of photos anyway that we took on the way through, stopping for all of 30 seconds.

The camera was wet, the car window was wet, so I guess we'll just have to come back and take some more photos on our next visit.

Annan

Town, Village or Hamlet: Town
County: Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

A very quick visit to Annan on the way to Hoddom Castle.  It was a very dark and dreary day so we didn't stop for long in town and only went to the supermarket on the outskirts.

This is definitely a place I would like to spend a couple of hours sometime in the future.

Cummertrees

Town, Village or Hamlet: Village

A village in Dumfries and Galloway consisting of the Cummertrees, Mouswald and Ruthwell church.  We spent about 10 minutes exploring the church grounds in light rain.

Whilst visiting places, I tend to take photographs of defining landmarks, however boring and so I give you...the bus stop!

On the way out of the village of Cummertrees...

Caerlaverock Castle

A rainy hour at Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfries and Galloway.

We didn't go into the castle this time because it was quite late in the day and the weather was bad, but we did spend some time in the gift shop and cafe.

A tiny place of only a few dwellings in Dumfries and Galloway.  Very close to Caerlaverock Castle.

It was a 'blink and you'll miss it' sort of place.  Maybe we did miss something of historical or architectural importance, but I doubt it.
